04 Licence
Japanese law accepts only the documents below. If you cannot show them at pick-up, we cannot hand over the car and the cancellation fee applies.
This check is a guide. We confirm the original documents at pick-up.
Documents you need and warningsInternational Driving Permit, translation, Japanese licenceBring one of these
Issued by the country or region that issued your licence. Bring it with your passport and your original licence. Valid in Japan for up to 1 year from arrival.
Switzerland · Germany · France · Belgium · Monaco · Taiwan
For licences from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco and Taiwan. The translation must be made by JAF, your embassy or consulate, or another authorized body.
A valid Japanese licence.
Not accepted in Japan
Mainland China is not a member of the 1949 Geneva Convention, so licences and “international licences” issued there are not valid in Japan. Chinese citizens can drive if they hold a valid licence from another country or region (for example Hong Kong or Macau) with a 1949 Geneva IDP issued there.
We check every document, including an automated AI check. Forged or altered documents are a crime in Japan — never send them.
Every driver must be 21 or older and show their own documents at pick-up.
