Car Museums Near Tokyo: Nissan, Honda & Fuji Drive from Haneda

Short answer
The main car museums near Tokyo for a day trip from Haneda are the Nissan Heritage Collection (Zama, Kanagawa; reservation only), the Honda Collection Hall (Motegi, Tochigi; free entry, but Mobility Resort Motegi admission and parking are extra) and the Fuji Motorsports Museum (Oyama, Shizuoka; paid). They are about 50-180 km away, or 1-3 hours one way.

Comparing the three car museums you can reach from Haneda
If you want to see the history of Japanese cars, three car museums can be visited on a day trip from Haneda Airport. Booking rules and distances differ, so compare them first (as of November 2026; details may change).
| Museum | Location | Booking | Price | From Haneda (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nissan Heritage Collection | Zama, Kanagawa (inside Nissan's Zama site) | Reservation-only guided tours | Check the official site | About 50 km, 1-1.5 hours |
| Fuji Motorsports Museum | Oyama, Sunto District, Shizuoka (attached to Fuji Speedway Hotel) | Online booking available (reported to be cheaper than at the counter) | Paid | About 100 km, 1.5-2 hours |
| Honda Collection Hall | Motegi, Haga District, Tochigi (inside Mobility Resort Motegi) | Check the official site | Free entry (Mobility Resort Motegi admission and parking extra) | About 170 km, 2.5-3 hours |
Distance and time vary a lot with route and traffic. Roads to leisure areas get busy on winter weekends, so allow plenty of time.
Nissan Heritage Collection (Zama): reservation only
This facility stores Nissan's production cars and racing cars through the decades, and you can only visit on a booked guided tour.
- How to book: Choose a date and time on the tour reservation site linked from the official website. It is first come, first served, with no waiting list. Bookings through travel agencies are not accepted, so you must book yourself.
- When booking opens: The next month's calendar is released at noon on the 5th of each month (this may differ around New Year and Golden Week). For a December-February trip, check on the 5th of the previous month.
- Group size: Up to 5 people per booking; groups of 6 or more must split into separate bookings. Children of junior high school age or younger must be accompanied by a guardian, who counts toward the total.
- Language: The guide speaks Japanese only. English is available as an audio guide you open on your smartphone by scanning a code. Bring earphones.
- On the day: The address is 2-10-1 Hironodai, Zama, Kanagawa. Arrive at the "District 2 Main Gate" at least 10 minutes before the start; a minibus takes you from the gate.
- By car: Official directions go from the Tomei Expressway Yokohama-Machida IC via National Route 16. The official site does not mention parking, so ask when you book.
Fuji Motorsports Museum (Oyama)
Next to Fuji Speedway and attached to the Fuji Speedway Hotel, this museum opened in October 2022. Supervised by the Toyota Automobile Museum, it covers about 130 years of motorsport history with around 40 notable Japanese and international cars (as reported at opening).
- Price: Paid. A July 2024 report gave adult prices of 1,800 yen on weekdays and 2,000 yen on weekends and holidays. Check current prices, opening hours and closing days on the official site.
- Combine with: It fits easily into a drive to Mt. Fuji and Hakone. See our Haneda to Mt. Fuji and Hakone drive for routes.
- Winter caution: Roads at the foot of Mt. Fuji can freeze in winter. Driving on snowy roads requires winter tyres and our prior consent (winter driving guide).
- No track driving: Our terms prohibit using the car for competitions or tests, including circuit driving. Enjoy Fuji Speedway as a spectator.
Honda Collection Hall (Motegi)
Located inside Mobility Resort Motegi in Motegi, Tochigi, the hall reopened after renovation on 1 March 2024.
- Exhibits: Four floors arranged by era show motorcycles, cars, power products, the HondaJet and racing machines. An audio story guide is available.
- Price: Entry is free, but Mobility Resort Motegi admission and parking are charged separately. Check prices and opening days on the official site.
- Combine with: It is in northern Kanto, like Nikko and Kinugawa Onsen, so it works well as a two-day, one-night trip (Nikko drive).
Museums further away (for reference)
- Toyota Automobile Museum (Aichi): About 350 km from Tokyo. It is more realistic as part of a trip to the Nagoya area than as a day trip.
- Mazda Museum (Hiroshima): Far from Tokyo; the shinkansen or a flight suits it better than driving. Check visiting arrangements on the official site.
How to plan the trip from Haneda
- Book the museum first: Nissan releases the next month at noon on the 5th. Fuji can be booked online.
- Book at Haneda: Pickup and return are on the 8th floor of the P5 car park at Terminal 3, 9:00-20:00. Bookings close 48 hours before pickup.
- Choose your route:
- Zama: Shutoko, then Tomei Expressway (Yokohama-Machida IC), then Route 16. About 50 km, 1-1.5 hours.
- Oyama: Shutoko, then Tomei Expressway toward Gotemba. About 100 km, 1.5-2 hours.
- Motegi: Shutoko, then Tohoku or Joban Expressway, then Kita-Kanto Expressway. About 170 km, 2.5-3 hours.
- Work back from the return time: Returns close at 20:00. Motegi takes 5-6 hours round trip, so stay overnight or leave early in the morning.
For expressway tolls and ETC cards, see our expressway tolls and ETC guide (contact us before departure about an ETC card). Daikoku PA can be closed on weekend nights, so museums are the more reliable way to enjoy car culture (Daikoku PA guide).
FAQ
Can I visit the Nissan Heritage Collection without a reservation?
No. It is a reservation-only guided tour booked through the official reservation site. The next month opens at noon on the 5th of each month, first come, first served.
Is there English at the Nissan Heritage Collection?
The guide speaks Japanese only, but there is an English audio guide on your smartphone. Bring earphones.
Is the Honda Collection Hall free?
Entry to the hall is free, but you need to pay Mobility Resort Motegi admission and parking separately.
Can I visit all three museums in one day from Haneda?
We do not recommend it. Zama, Oyama and Motegi are in different directions, and Motegi alone takes 5-6 hours round trip. Plan one museum a day, or at most Zama and Oyama together.
Can I drive the rental car on Fuji Speedway?
No. Our terms prohibit use for competitions or tests, including circuit driving.
