Slam Dunk Crossing Kamakura: Where to Park & Photo Rules

Short answer
To visit the Slam Dunk crossing Kamakura is famous for (the railway crossing by Kamakura-Kokomae Station) by car, do not stop near the crossing. Park at a coin car park or park-and-ride lot around Kamakura Station and take the Enoden line. Take photos from the designated area in the nearby park, not from the road. Kamakura is about 45 km, roughly 1 hour, from Haneda. Do not use illegal unlicensed taxis.

What is the Slam Dunk crossing?
The railway crossing next to Kamakura-Kokomae Station on the Enoshima Electric Railway (Enoden), in Koshigoe, Kamakura, Kanagawa, is known for looking like a scene in the opening of the *SLAM DUNK* anime, and it draws many visitors from abroad. It is also an ordinary crossing in the middle of a residential area. Kamakura City says residents have complained about behaviour that could cause accidents, such as taking photos in the middle of the road, as well as parking and stopping on the street, trespassing and littering.
This is an unofficial guide to renting a car at Haneda Airport for a day trip to Kamakura and Enoshima, and seeing the crossing while following the rules. The short answer: do not drive up to the crossing. Park somewhere further away and take the Enoden.
Local rules and recent measures (from 2025 media reports)
| When | What happened |
|---|---|
| 13-16 September 2025 | Kamakura City removed planting in the park in front of the crossing and set up a trial photo area about 18 m long |
| 24 September 2025 | The Kanto District Transport Bureau (MLIT) and others urged visitors not to use illegal unlicensed taxis ("shirotaku") |
| From 1 October 2025 | Traffic guards increased from 2 to 7 (7 until 8 October, then a planned 5, according to reports) |
On site, guards tell people "do not take photos on the road" and "please go into the park", guiding them to the photo area in the nearby park. Arrangements may change, so check Kamakura City's information for the latest situation as of November 2026.
Please follow these rules:
- Do not step into the road or onto the tracks to take photos. Shoot from the park photo area.
- Do not stop your car near the crossing (no parking, no stopping, no quick drop-offs while someone waits).
- Do not enter private property, take your rubbish home, and keep your voice down.
- Do not use illegal unlicensed taxis. Unlicensed paid transport is illegal, and you may not be covered if there is an accident.
Where to park: park-and-ride and the Enoden
Kamakura City promotes "park and ride": leave your car at a car park away from the centre and switch to the Enoden or other transport. City materials list four car parks: Enoden Parking Center, Inamuragasaki car park, Shichirigahama Beach car park, and the prefectural Yuigahama underground car park (usually suspended in July and August; Yuigahama is also suspended on 1-3 January). Availability and prices change, so check Kamakura City's information before you go.
Suggested plan:
- Park at a coin car park or park-and-ride lot away from the crossing, such as around Kamakura Station, Hase or Enoshima.
- Take the Enoden and get off at Kamakura-Kokomae Station.
- Photograph the train and the sea from the park photo area.
- Ride the Enoden to Enoshima or Hase (Great Buddha, Hasedera), then return to your car.

Winter (December-February): crowds and timing
Snow is rarely a concern in Kamakura in winter, but temples, shrines and the coastal Route 134 get crowded on weekends and over New Year.
- Weekday mornings are relatively calm at both the crossing and the car parks.
- Sunset is early, so if you want the evening light over the sea, be at the photo area by around 15:00.
- If a car park is full, do not wait on the street for a space; head to another car park.
