JR Pass vs Rental Car in Japan: Which Is Cheaper for You?

JR Pass vs Rental Car in Japan: Which Is Cheaper for You?

Short answer

JR Pass vs rental car comes down to where you are going. For fast trips between big cities, the train wins (a 7-day JAPAN RAIL PASS is 50,000 yen per adult when bought online officially, as of November 2026). For onsen towns and lakes far from stations with 3-5 people, a rental car fits better (Go on from 14,650 yen per day; tolls and fuel extra).

The short answer: decide by destination

In Japan it is rarely a strict choice between the train and a car. The realistic approach is to decide by where you are going. Between cities such as Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, the train (Shinkansen) is fast and you never have to think about parking. But if you want to visit several places far from stations, such as onsen towns, lakes, mountains or suburban museums, a car gives you far more freedom with your time.

Train costs: JAPAN RAIL PASS prices as of November 2026

The pass most visitors compare is the nationwide JAPAN RAIL PASS from the JR Group. These are the prices (Ordinary class) confirmed on the official site:

PassOfficial online purchase (adult / child)Overseas authorized agents (adult / child)
7 days50,000 yen / 25,000 yen53,000 yen / 27,000 yen
14 days80,000 yen / 40,000 yen84,000 yen / 42,000 yen
21 days100,000 yen / 50,000 yen105,000 yen / 53,000 yen
  • Children are those aged 6 to 11 at the time of use.
  • According to the JR Group, prices at overseas agents went up for purchases from 1 October 2026, while official online prices stay the same for now. The JR Group says it will announce later when that freeze ends.
  • Check the "Terms of use" on the official site for eligible trains and conditions. Prices may change.

Besides the pass, you can also buy individual tickets for each journey. Which works out better depends heavily on your itinerary, so once your destinations are set, compare them on the official site.

How rental car costs add up

A rental car is priced per car, so the more people share it, the lower the cost per person. Go on Rent-a-Car starts from 14,650 yen per day (tax and the Peace of Mind Pack included) and the price can vary by date; check the site for your dates. On top of the rental price, budget for:

  1. Expressway tolls: not included in the rental price and they vary by destination. Check our expressway tolls and ETC guide and the official toll search.
  2. Fuel: the car takes premium petrol and is returned with a full tank. See our guide to refuelling a rental car.
  3. Parking: hotels and coin parking in central Tokyo are on the expensive side. Our Tokyo parking guide gives typical rates.
  4. Deposit: 50,000 yen is pre-authorized on your card at pick-up. It is a hold, not a charge, and is released after return.

Example: a family of three for 7 days

Take a family of two adults and one child (aged 6-11).

  • JAPAN RAIL PASS (7 days, official online): 50,000 yen x 2 adults + 25,000 yen for the child = 125,000 yen. You may also pay for buses, private railways or taxis on routes JR does not cover.
  • Rental car (7 days): from 14,650 yen per day, so the rental is from 102,550 yen for 7 days. Add expressway tolls, fuel and parking. Prices vary by date, so check the actual total on the booking screen.

This is only a way of thinking about it, not a quote. If your trip is Tokyo to Osaka and back by Shinkansen, the train is faster and costs are easier to predict. If instead you leave Haneda, loop through places like Nikko, the Fuji Five Lakes and Hakone, and come back to Haneda, a car means far fewer transfers and much less dragging of luggage.

Or combine the two

You do not have to pick one for the whole trip. For example, rent a car at Haneda for the first few days to explore outside Tokyo, return it at Haneda, then use trains for sightseeing in the city. Go on Rent-a-Car pick-up and return is only on the 8th floor of the P5 car park at Haneda Airport Terminal 3 (9:00-20:00), so plan the car part of your trip as a Haneda-to-Haneda loop.

Check before choosing a rental car

  1. Licence: you need documents that let you drive in Japan. Use our licence checker and read our guide to driving in Japan with a foreign licence.
  2. Winter destinations: snowy roads need winter tyres. Our terms prohibit driving on snowy roads without our prior consent, so contact us before booking if you plan to visit a snowy area.
  3. People and luggage: the car is a Volkswagen Golf Variant TSI Lounge (5 seats, automatic). Make sure your group and luggage fit. Child seats depend on availability.
  4. Booking deadline: book up to 48 hours before pick-up and up to 180 days ahead.

Example from Haneda: 2 days where a car makes sense

On day 1, pick up at Haneda at 9:00 and drive to Nikko via the Shuto and Tohoku expressways (about 150 km, roughly 2 to 2.5 hours). See the shrines and temples and stay at an onsen town, then on day 2 get back to Haneda by 20:00. For details see our Tokyo to Nikko by car guide, and for other destinations, our Tokyo road trip planner. If a road trip sounds right for you, book at Haneda to check availability.

FAQ

Which is cheaper, the JR Pass or a rental car?

It depends on group size and destination. A rental car is priced per car, so with 3-5 people the cost per person drops. But expressway tolls, fuel and parking are extra, so compare for your own itinerary.

How much is the JAPAN RAIL PASS?

According to the official site, the 7-day Ordinary pass is 50,000 yen per adult and 25,000 yen per child when bought online officially, or 53,000 yen and 27,000 yen from overseas agents (as of November 2026). Prices may change.

Are expressway tolls included in the rental car price?

No. Expressway tolls and fuel are paid by you. Go on Rent-a-Car rental prices start from 14,650 yen per day (tax and the Peace of Mind Pack included) and can vary by date.

Is a rental car useful if I am only sightseeing in Tokyo?

Central Tokyo is easy by train and parking is expensive. We suggest trains for the city and a rental car for day trips or overnight trips outside Tokyo.

Which is better for snowy regions in winter?

The train is the safer choice for snowy regions. If you go by rental car, you need winter tyres, and our terms prohibit driving on snowy roads without our prior consent, so contact us before booking.
