Tokyo Road Trip Itinerary: Day Trips to 3 Days From Haneda

Short answer

A Tokyo road trip itinerary is easiest to plan by interest and trip length. Day trips: Kamakura, Hakone, Lake Kawaguchi or Zama. Two days: Nikko and Kinugawa, the Ashikaga illuminations or Ikaho. Three days: the Fuji Five Lakes plus Hakone. All routes start and end at Haneda; for mountains or snowy areas from December to February, contact us before booking.

How to use this planner

Pick what you are into and how many days you have, and the table below shows a route that leaves Haneda Airport and comes back to Haneda. Every plan starts and ends at the Go on Rent-a-Car pick-up and return point, the 8th floor of the P5 car park at Haneda Airport Terminal 3 (9:00-20:00).

  1. In the table, choose your interest row: cars, anime and manga spots, onsen, or scenery and illuminations.
  2. Choose your column: day trip, 2 days / 1 night, or 3 days / 2 nights.
  3. Read the route where they meet, then open the linked guide for directions, prices and things to watch out for.
  4. If you travel between December and February, read "Winter tips" below.

Distances and times assume a day without heavy traffic. Weekends, public holidays and the New Year period can take longer.

Routes for car lovers

The Go on Rent-a-Car car is a Volkswagen Golf Variant TSI Lounge (5 seats, automatic, premium petrol). It is not a JDM car: these are plans for seeing Japanese car culture, not for renting a Japanese car.

  • Day trip: from Haneda to the Nissan Heritage Collection in Zama, Kanagawa (reservation only), about 50 km and roughly 1 hour. See our car museums guide for how to book. Daikoku PA, famous for its night scene, can only be entered from the Shuto Expressway and is sometimes closed. Before going, read our Daikoku PA guide for closures and rules.
  • 2 days / 1 night: on day 1 take the Tomei Expressway to the Fuji Motorsports Museum in Oyama, Shizuoka (about 100 km, roughly 1.5 hours). Stay in Hakone, then on day 2 return to Haneda via the Odawara-Atsugi Road and the Tomei Expressway.
  • 3 days / 2 nights: Zama on day 1, Oyama on day 2, and on day 3 the Fuji Five Lakes and back to Haneda on the Chuo Expressway. For roads around Fuji, see Haneda to Mt Fuji and Hakone by car.
  • In January: Tokyo Auto Salon 2027 runs 15-17 January 2027 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba (official site, as of November 2026). It is close to Haneda via the Bayshore Route of the Shuto Expressway, so it works as a day trip. For parking and tickets, see our Tokyo Auto Salon 2027 guide.
  • The Honda Collection Hall in Motegi, Tochigi, is easiest to combine with Nikko (see our Tokyo to Nikko by car guide).

Our terms prohibit use for competition or testing, including circuit driving. Racing and noisy driving on public roads are also illegal. Keep to the speed limit.

Anime and manga spots

  • Day trip: Kamakura and Enoshima (about 50 km, 1 to 1.5 hours). For the Kamakurakokomae railway crossing known from "SLAM DUNK", leave the car at a coin car park and take the Enoden line. Do not take photos from the road or park on the street. See our Kamakurakokomae crossing guide.
  • 2 days / 1 night: from Shibukawa-Ikaho IC on the Kan-etsu Expressway to Mt Haruna and Shibukawa, linked to "Initial D" (about 150 km, 2 to 2.5 hours). Stay at Ikaho Onsen. Winter mountain roads freeze easily, so read our Initial D Mt Haruna guide and contact us before booking if snow is possible.
  • 3 days / 2 nights: Kamakura to Hakone on day 1; on day 2 the Fuji Five Lakes, including Lake Motosu from "Laid-Back Camp" (Yuru Camp), staying at Lake Kawaguchi; day 3 back to Haneda on the Chuo Expressway. More spots are in our anime pilgrimage road trip guide.

Onsen routes

  • Day trip: a Hakone day spa (about 1.5 hours). Work back from the 20:00 return and leave Hakone by early evening.
  • 2 days / 1 night: see Nikko's World Heritage shrines and temples, then stay at Kinugawa Onsen (about 2 to 2.5 hours from Haneda). In winter Toshogu closes at 16:00.
  • 3 days / 2 nights: one night each in Hakone and the Fuji Five Lakes, or two nights in Nikko and Kinugawa with a trip to Lake Chuzenji. Above the Irohazaka road there is snow and ice in winter, so contact us in advance.

Scenery and illumination routes

  • Day trip: Lake Kawaguchi (about 2 hours). Enjoy Mt Fuji across the lake and be back at Haneda by 20:00.
  • 2 days / 1 night: see Ashikaga Flower Park's "Flower Fantasy" (until 14 February 2027, closed 31 December) at night and stay near Ashikaga, then visit Nikko on day 2 or head straight back to Haneda. Returning the car on the same day after the illumination is hard, so this is planned as an overnight trip.
  • 3 days / 2 nights: Ashikaga on day 1, Nikko and Kinugawa on day 2, and on day 3 stop at the Honda Collection Hall in Motegi on the way to Haneda. For other venues, see our winter illuminations near Tokyo guide.

Winter tips (December to February)

DestinationWinter notes
Kamakura, Zama, Makuhari, AshikagaSnow is rare, but bridges and similar spots can freeze at night and in the morning
Hakone, Fuji Five LakesFrequent snow and ice; some sections have chain requirements
Mt Haruna, IkahoMountain roads freeze easily
Nikko, Kinugawa, Oku-NikkoNikko City asks drivers to fit winter tyres in Oku-Nikko, Kinugawa Onsen and other areas
  • Our terms prohibit driving on snowy roads without our prior consent. Snowy roads require winter tyres. If you plan to visit a snowy area, tell us your destination and dates before booking. See our winter driving guide.
  • If snow is forecast, switch from a mountain plan to a lowland one such as Kamakura or Makuhari.
  • Winter days are short and it starts getting dark around 16:30. Plan to finish mountain roads while it is still light.

Before you book

  1. Return time: pick-up and return are 9:00-20:00. On the last day, allow time for traffic and refuelling when deciding when to head back to Haneda.
  2. Expressway tolls: not included in the rental price and paid by you. See our expressway tolls and ETC guide, and ask us about an ETC card before you set off.
  3. Train or car: if most of your trip is inside Tokyo, trains may be more convenient. Our JR Pass vs rental car comparison helps you decide.
  4. Pick-up steps: read our Terminal 3 pick-up guide so you know what happens from arrival to departure.

Prices start from 14,650 yen per day (tax and the Peace of Mind Pack included) and can vary by date; check the site for your dates. You can book up to 48 hours before pick-up and up to 180 days ahead. Once your route is set, book at Haneda to check availability.

FAQ

What day trips can I do on a road trip from Haneda?

Within the 9:00 pick-up and 20:00 return window, good options are Kamakura and Enoshima, Hakone, Lake Kawaguchi (Fuji Five Lakes), the Nissan Heritage Collection in Zama (reservation only) and, in January, Tokyo Auto Salon at Makuhari Messe.

Can I return the car somewhere other than Haneda?

No. Go on Rent-a-Car pick-up and return is only on the 8th floor of the P5 car park at Haneda Airport Terminal 3, so every plan here is a Haneda-to-Haneda loop.

Is it OK to drive to Hakone or Nikko in winter?

Both areas get a lot of snow and ice. Our terms prohibit driving on snowy roads without our prior consent, and snowy roads require winter tyres. Tell us your destination and dates before booking.

Can I rent a Japanese (JDM) car?

The Go on Rent-a-Car car is a Volkswagen Golf Variant TSI Lounge. For car lovers, we suggest plans that visit Japanese car museums and car events instead.

How much are expressway tolls?

They vary by route and time of day and are not included in the rental price. Check the official toll search; our expressway tolls and ETC guide explains how to pay.
